Jags reportedly mulling extension for Trevor Lawrence, but is that the right choice?

This offseason, several teams are breaking the bank for their quarterback. However, the Jacksonville Jaguars should think twice before doing the same for Trevor Lawrence.

After the Detroit Lions recently signed QB Jared Goff to a four-year deal with an average annual salary of $53M, the Jaguars are considering making Lawrence the next $50M passer.

"I'm told that talks have been progressing fairly nicely, that certainly there's a hope among both sides that they can get this done," ESPN's Jeremy Fowler said Sunday on "SportsCenter," via Bleacher Report. "He's three years into his rookie deal, so it's not urgent to have to get it done right this moment, but Jacksonville, I'm told, is pretty committed to trying to get this done. This will also be a deal probably above that $50M range, but they are all in on Lawrence; they've been talking."

The Jaguars recently exercised Lawrence's fifth-year option, meaning he has two years left on his rookie contract. Jacksonville may want to be proactive and sign a deal before the price skyrockets, but extending him could be risky.

Lawrence — the first overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft — has flashed potential in three seasons but failed to establish himself as a superstar.
After leading the Jaguars to a playoff win over the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022, he backtracked in 2023.

In 16 games, the 24-year-old tied for fourth in the league in interceptions (14) and finished 18th in QBR (56.1). Jacksonville also missed the postseason.

Lawrence battled a knee and shoulder injury last season, which may explain the slide. Still, he has been turnover-prone, throwing 10 or more interceptions twice in three seasons.

The Jaguars should consider waiting before extending Lawrence. They want to avoid overpaying for a player who has yet to prove he's elite.
